The Refrigerator Magnet

Don’t resist the magnetic pull of Christ!

Have you ever found yourself automatically heading towards the refrigerator? I know I have!  Not even knowing why…not even hungry. . . just headed towards the refrigerator with an almost magnetic pull?

Congratulations!  You’ve just had an identity crisis!  You, for just a moment, became a small, insignificant refrigerator magnet.  You know, like one of those magnets that finds its way to the refrigerator without even needing to be there-it’s not even holding up a paper!  It just found its way to the refrigerator.  An insignificant refrigerator magnet. If that made you a little angry, that’s okay, read on.

Here’s the truth!  There’s nothing about you that is insignificant! God created you in His image.  He loves you and wants you to love Him back.  He is jealous for you.  He wants your “magnetic pull” to go towards Him, not the refrigerator.  Your identity is in Christ, not in the food you eat.  Your comforter and counselor is the Creator of the world and the Creator of you.

When a child encounters something of which she is scared or unsure she usually run backs to her parents as a place of safety or comfort, direction and support.  When we, as adults, encounter situations that are scary or uncertain, the true safety is in running to our heavenly Father, to Jesus, to the Holy Spirit.  If we call on the Name of Jesus, run to Him as our refuge, accept and embrace our magnetic pull towards Him, we will be safe, comforted, directed and supported.  We will find our identity in Christ in a deeper, more meaningful way.  When we run to the refrigerator instead of Christ, clarity is not found, situations are not seen or dealt with honestly.  Asking Jesus to give us clarity and wisdom about the truth of our situations grows us up and towards our Savior.  Reaching for the refrigerator just grows us out - not good.  The enemy would prefer this though.

Reaching for Christ and not the handle of the refrigerator is a habit that can be formed and practiced.  Looking for answers in Christ is likely the most rewarding habit you may ever develop.  Developing good habits usually takes time and patience, but why not work at it?  This is between you and your Savior and He promises to reward those who diligently seek Him.  Hebrews 11:6 He is a rewarder to those who diligently seek Him.

Embrace the magnetic pull toward Christ today!
